Affordable, Quality Healthcare for All
The economic downturn has wreaked havoc on American households, with recent Census data indicating
that a staggering 1 in 7 Americans live in poverty—the highest level in four decades. Due to loss of jobs,
50 million people are without healthcare coverage.
In this rapidly changing landscape of national healthcare where "access for everyone" tops the headlines,
T.H.E. Clinic, Inc. has been living this vision for more than three decades—and the need for its services
is greater than ever.
The aptly named T.H.E. (To Help Everyone) Clinic was founded in February 1974 by a small group of medical volunteers who sought to bring affordable, quality healthcare to uninsured women in the underserved, economically challenged area of Southwestern Los Angeles. Those dedicated women included: Vi Verreux, Joan Alpert, Barbara Saunders, Susan Schlager, Debbi Kates, Fredda Draluck, Marilyn Stone, and Marilyn Norwood.
Over the years, thanks to hard work and a sense of responsibility and compassion, T.H.E. Clinic has garnered
support from government agencies and public policy institutions like the California Community Foundation, United Way,
the California Family Health Council and more. And as the community and its healthcare needs grew, T.H.E. Clinic
grew to support right in stride.
A Clinic Patients Can Call Home
Today, T.H.E. Clinic, Inc. is caring for and improving the health of more than 12,190 in-need patients--men,
women, seniors and children of all ages--from the vastly diverse, low-income population of greater L.A. County.
T.H.E. Clinic’s diverse and culturally aware staff (over 13 languages spoken) sets it apart from other healthcare
facilities.
The staff prides itself on their dedication to earning the trust of their patients by exceeding expectations—a
trust that gives patients peace of mind that they can always count on T.H.E. for their healthcare needs. That
means it’s simply not enough to provide affordable medical services alone, but to also take the time to forge
personal relationships with patients and ensure they feel heard, understood and supported, regardless of
background or socio-economic status.
It means sticking with their patients for the long haul and facilitating an environment of education and
encouragement to take a proactive role in improving and maintaining a healthier lifestyle--for themselves,
their families, and future generations to come. T.H.E. Clinic is a place that patients can call home.
Services for the Whole Person
Working tirelessly every day to help improve the lives of those who lack basic medical care and preventive
education, T.H.E. Clinic provides a one stop haven for an array of services --including medical health
services for men, women, children and teens, as well as public health and preventive education services --
all designed to treat body, mind, and spirit. Many patients may qualify for programs that enable us to offer low-cost services; those that do not are charged on a sliding fee scale.
In 2011, T.H.E. Clinic was accredited by The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that evaluates compliance with standards for healthcare facilities. At the same time as it presented this “Gold Seal of Approval,” The Joint Commission also designated T.H.E. Clinic as a Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH), one of the first in the nation to be honored for “highest commitment to delivering primary health care in a comprehensive, coordinated and accessible model.”
Vision for the Future
As T.H.E. Clinic, Inc. marks its 38th anniversary of service to the community, it also marks a monumental, visionary path to an even brighter future. T.H.E. Clinic extends its reach beyond the more than 12,190 in-need patients it serves today. These efforts ultimately will benefit current and new patients’ care experience—from the minute they walk in the door to treatment, recovery and support. Efforts include developing and enhancing existing healthcare services, implementing infrastructure and technology upgrades, expanding into multiple locations and satellite sites.
In 2011, aided with a grant from Los Angeles County Education Foundation, T.H.E. Clinic at Lennox opened a school-based clinic and satellite facility at the Lennox School District for students on the campus. A mobile clinic, funded through the County’s Clinic Capacity Expansion Program (CCEP), serves as a satellite for students and nearby residents at Dorsey High School, Crenshaw High School and at the Lennox Public Library. At the same time, T.H.E. Clinic is coordinating an expanded and strengthened staff that will ensure it remains at the forefront of crafting treatment and educational regimens to support its growing community.
It’s a big vision, but with the same determination and sense of responsibility as its founders, T.H.E. Clinic is up for the
challenge. When the rest of the country catches up, T.H.E. Clinic will be continuing the quest from its beginnings over three
decades ago: providing high-quality, affordable healthcare services to the diverse, in-need communities of Los Angeles County
with the compassion and respect everyone deserves.
