T.H.E Clinic Wins Coveted Primary Care Medical Home Designation

T.H.E. Clinic is among the first ambulatory care organizations in the country to be awarded a new Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH) designation by The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that conducts onsite inspections to evaluate compliance with standards for healthcare facilities. The Joint Commission awarded T.H.E. Clinic accreditation as an ambulatory care organization, earning The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approvaltm, at the same time that it received the PCMH designation.

To become an accredited ambulatory care facility, T.H.E. Clinic underwent a rigorous onsite survey as a team of expert surveyors evaluated T.H.E. Clinic for compliance with standards of care, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

T.H.E. Clinic provides a full spectrum of primary care services and is one of the few nonprofit healthcare clinics in South Los Angeles. It is in an area of the city where newly arrived immigrants live adjacent to long-term residents, bringing great diversity to T.H.E. Clinic’s staff and patients. T.H.E. provides care in a multitude of languages, which is one reason why it has long been known as a medical facility where anyone can feel at home.

According to Michael Kulczycki, executive director of the Ambulatory Care Accreditation Program for The Joint Commission, “Organizations that pursue the PCMH options are demonstrating the highest commitment to delivering primary care in a comprehensive, coordinated and accessible model. I commend T.H.E. Clinic for successfully achieving this pinnacle and for its dedication to continually improving patient care.”

T.H.E. Clinic Board President Is Keynote Speaker in Chicago

Leon Watts, III, president of the T.H.E. board of directors, served as one of the keynote speakers at the December 9, 2011, First Annual Breakfast Forum at Chicago’s Family Christian Health Center.

The breakfast forum was a venue for introducing its new CEO Dr. Lisa Green, who helped established the Center in the year 2000 to care for patients in Chicago and its surrounding cities. The facility, like T.H.E. Clinic, focuses on helping individuals who are unemployed, underemployed, uninsured, and homeless. It treats some 260 patients a day. Watts was one of several keynote speakers at the breakfast forum. A native of Chicago, Watts visited the Center in April while visiting his sister in his hometown. He was pleased to meet members of the Center’s staff during that period, saying that it is “inspirational to see what other communities are doing.” He is owner of Guardian Home Services, a home repair and renovation firm that he has operated for some 30 years.

T.H.E. Medical Mobile Clinic

Not a gourmet food truck, nor a bus, this 37-foot marvel on wheels is the medical mobile clinic from T.H.E. Clinic. Here, T.H.E. CEO Risë K. Phillips introduces the new medical clinic before a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Dorsey High School on October 26, 2011. The medical mobile clinic is at Dorsey on Mondays and Wednesdays to care for students and neighboring residents. Speakers at the special ceremony included Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas; Dr. Reginald Sample, Dorsey principal; Jacqueline Russell, LAUSD Organizational Facilitator, Local District 3; and Karimu McNeal, parent representative. The medical mobile clinic, which includes two treatment rooms, is part of T.H.E. Clinic’s effort to expand services to more Los Angeles residents, including those who find it difficult to get to the primary care treatment center due to a lack of transportation.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, a champion of healthcare for underserved youth and adults, discusses the benefits the T.H.E. mobile clinic is bringing to South Los Angeles with Yvette Wheeler.
